Choosing
Between Bahama, Colonial and Accordion
Shutters
Nothing is worse than having to go through a hurricane and having all of your windows
shattered from debris and high winds. There are a number of different options you have when trying to protect
your windows from a storm. Three types of shutters that many people in coastal homes are starting to install are
accordion shutters, Bahamas shutters, and
colonial shutters. All three of which have their own advantages and uses.
Bahamas shutters normally are made with either a wood or composite material.
They are a great way to provide a source of shade for any window, while still allowing for visibility with an
opening on the bottom. The security from a storm for this type of shutters comes when the unit is completely
closed and sealed against the window. Although they can be used to keep would-be intruders from a storm out of
your home, they may not provide as much protection as shutters that completely cover the window when closed.
Wind and debris can easily get through the slat design and cause significant damage if the slats are broken
off.
Another type of shutter similar to the
Bahamas shutters are colonial shutters. These are shutters that can be opened up completely and allow for
complete visibility from the window. However, they can also be used as protection from a storm simply by folding
the two panels on either side together and latching them. Either of these two types of shutters can be custom
designed to allow for a perfect into any window.
The third type of shutter that is great
for use in stormy weather are accordion shutters. Now, this type is not necessarily the greatest looking window
covering, it is probably the best for providing security and protection in a storm out of the three. The design
of these shutters features is similar to the design of rolling shutters, however, instead of folding up and
down, they fold apart to the left and right side of the window.
As can be seen, all three of these types
of shutters provide a sense of security. If you are looking for design and look and still want a small sense of
security, the Bahamas and colonial designs are probably your best bet. If you are looking less at design and
look and more toward a higher sense of security, accordion shutters are probably the
better fit.
