Impact
Resistant Windows Options
Many homeowners are starting to invest in are impact resistant windows. The
way they are anchored coupled with the construction of these types of windows helps protect from high winds and
debris brought about by hurricanes. The idea behind these types of windows stems from shatter proof glass that
has been used in cars for many years to help protect passengers.
There are essentially two types of shatter
proof windows that are normally installed in houses where hurricanes are common. The first of which consists of
two panes of glass covering a sheet of glass made from a shatter proof material. Once a significant force is
applied to the glass, the panes may shatter. However, the shatter proof material inside holds the frame of the
window together so that the barrier stays in place. This type of design is made to handle debris hurled around
by high wind speeds from hurricane impact and also repeated impacts from possible intruders. Homeowners like it because it makes it very difficult for wind or water to
enter the home where these windows are installed.
The second type of impact resistant
windows installed in homes is a certain film material applied to the outside of the glass panes. With these
filmed windows, the glass inside can still shatter, however, the film covering will hold all of the pieces
together within the frame. Since the film is added to the glaze that is already covering the window, their
functionality may be weakened. The durability of this system really depends on how well the material can stay
within the frame.
Either type you choose will significantly
help decrease the chances of any debris or winds from getting into your home unabated. Although many people in
homes along the coast choose to board up their windows during a storm, impact resistant windows can often work as well, if not
better.
